Rare Purple Aurora Reflection
In early fall or late spring, a rare purple type of auroras can sometimes be seen just before sunrise when the sunlight is falling on ionized nitrogen molecules in the high atmosphere (the sunlight can not yet be seen by an observer from yjr Earth). This cause an intensified emission of light as shown in this photo taken in early October just before dawn. The full Moon (Harvest Moon) adds to the brightness of the landscape. In 15 years "under the northern lights", I have only witnessed this type of aurora once.
